How We Got Started

Life is a non-profit, Center for Independent Living and has been serving Southeastern Idaho since 1999. We believe that all persons with disabilities are able to not only live but thrive in the communities of their choice. We are one of the three Independent Living Centers in Idaho, and there are currently over 340 Independent Living Centers nation-wide.

The first Independent Living Center was created in the 1970’s, in California. Ed Robert’s who is known as the Father of the Independent Living movement, had a crucial role and was an advocate for persons with disabilities to ensure they had the same access and opportunities. Today, we still support the original vision of Independent Living for persons with disabilities. Independent Living is based on the belief in freedom, overcoming barriers, living with dignity, and independence. Every person has the right to make their own choices and to control the decisions in their lives and Life will support you in meeting all your independence goals.

Today IL Centers are the cornerstone of individual and systems advocacy for disability issues throughout the US and continue to expand into local communities around the nation.

Once persons with disabilities were spit upon and pitied. Today the Disability Community has made much progress in overcoming these negative attitudes and because of the IL and disability rights movement, individuals with disabilities are part of mainstream society. However, there is still much to be done. Too many persons with disabilities are institutionalized in nursing facilities and want to leave. But because of the Independent Living Centers, more and more individuals with disabilities are moving back to the community based on their choice and not a decision made by the medical system.

Our Mission

Our mission at Life, is to empower people with disabilities to manage their own lives, make their own choices, and give them the information and knowledge to assist them to live with independence.

In Home Care Services

In-home care services can be a critical part of a person’s independent living program. Skilled in-home assistance with bathing, cooking, chores, and more, can help keep a home safe and livable. What people are saying…

Mary

Just wanted to send an email out to let you know how much I appreciate the help from the staff in the Pocatello office. I can almost always find the medical equipment I need for my patient’s in your lending closet. Also, the help Life Inc. provides for the community in assisting with Social Security applications and finding other resources for at risk populations is extremely helpful. I find that Life Inc. fills a gap in our community by providing services to those individuals who need it most. Again, kudos to Life Inc. and the employees who make it all happen.

Rebecca

Love LIFE it’s a one stop shop. They do it all and are so genuine in it.

LaRue

LIFE saved me. If it wasn’t for them, me and my husband would have had to move into a facility. We love them.

George

LIFE is amazing, they go above and beyond, always there and so knowledgeable.

Dorothy

The company treats me as an individual, not as a paycheck. They do more than they need to help me with my housing services, in my home. They give me someone to talk to, they are always nice, love them.
